A buddy’s mom had one exactly like that. Always thought they were way cooler than a Taurus/Sable but parts were definitely an issue in the pre-internet days.

Roomm ate of mine in college’s family had two identical silver ones. Very fancy, with unheard of luxury like rear power seats. Also a trip computer, which was useful since the one he drove had a broken fuel gauge.

I have honestly never even heard of this make. Was it Mercury’s luxury mark?

Update the rear,

((Ford Granada (in the U.K. , later called the Ford Scorpio))

Kinja'd!!!

Swap the Merkur for Ford badges and Scorpio badges for Granada badges.

Confuse everyone.

O utstanding.

The european model was less busy in the back, better looking, less baboon-butted if I may say this.

German Fords rebadged as a premium brand for the USDM. The brand existed for model years 1985-89, the Scorpio only 88-89 I believe. There were two models, the Merkur XR4Ti (Ford Sierra ) and Merkur Scorpio (Ford Scorpio)

I remember going to the dealership with my dad to look at one of these when they were new. They had reclining rear seats, and as a kid I was blown away.

Dad wasn’t blown away. I believe these were much more expensive than anything else Mercury was offering on the same showroom floor. We got a Sable.

It’s an Americanised Mk3 Granada/Scorpio (both names were used). Originally a hatch which was intended to replace the four door and estate ersions of the Mk2. In the event Ford wound up making those versions as well.

Here’s an example of the original.

And what it became by the 90s.

Sorta kinda. In the 80s Ford wanted to sell more European-style cars in the US. They sold tweaked versions of a couple of their German-built European-market cars as Merkurs, at Lincoln-Mercury dealers. The Merkur Scorpio was basically a Ford Scorpio and the Merkur XR4Ti was closely related to the Ford Sierra.

I considered buying one of these years ago. It was a manual one.

Who wouldn’t want a RWD, Manual, sedan with all the futuristic styling  of a first gen Taurus?

My dad had a Sterling 827 in the 80s that also had reclining rear seats and similarly blew my 8 year old mind.

It was an unreliable heap that he eventually replaced with its much more reliable sibling, an Acura Legend.

There is one here in my town. The lady who owns it was shocked that I recognized the car and asked her about it.
